Hadith #10143

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights three essential elements that lead to salvation. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The first element mentioned by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is (al-haqq) "الْحَقِّ", which translates to "truth." The concept of truth is central to Islam, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of truth. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of adhering to the truth and avoiding falsehood. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42),

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

The second element mentioned is (al-batil) "الْباطِلِ", which means "falsehood." Falsehood encompasses anything that contradicts the truth and leads to deception and misguidance. Allah warns against falsehood in Surah Al-Hajj (22:30),

That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.

The third element highlighted by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is (al-jidd) "الْجِدِّ", which can be translated as "working hard" or "striving." This refers to the effort and dedication required to uphold the truth and reject falsehood. It encompasses actively seeking knowledge, practicing righteousness, and striving for the betterment of oneself and society. Allah encourages striving in His cause in Surah Al-Hadid (57:21),

Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. Espousing truth means not only recognizing it but also standing firmly upon it, regardless of the challenges or opposition one may face. It requires sincerity, integrity, and a commitment to upholding the principles of Islam. By embracing the truth, Muslims align themselves with the divine guidance and attain salvation.

Shunning falsehood is equally important, as it protects us from falling into the traps of deception and misguidance. It requires a discerning mind, critical thinking, and a constant evaluation of our beliefs and actions. By avoiding falsehood, Muslims safeguard their faith and preserve their spiritual well-being.

Working hard or striving is the practical manifestation of our commitment to the truth and rejection of falsehood. It entails continuous effort, self-discipline, and perseverance in seeking knowledge, practicing good deeds, and contributing positively to society. By exerting ourselves in the pursuit of righteousness, Muslims not only benefit themselves but also become agents of positive change in the world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasized these three elements as essential for salvation. By adhering to the truth, rejecting falsehood, and working hard, Muslims can attain spiritual elevation, righteousness, and ultimately, the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us strive to embody these teachings in our lives, continuously seeking the truth, rejecting falsehood, and exerting ourselves in the pursuit of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to espouse the truth, shun falsehood, and work hard, so that we may attain salvation in this world and the hereafter.
