اَللَّجاجُ يَشينُ النَّفْسَ۔
Stubbornness tarnishes the soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stubbornness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اللَّجاجُ يَشينُ النَّفْسَ۔" This can be translated as
Stubbornness tarnishes the soul.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.
The word (al-lajaj) "اللَّجاجُ" refers to stubbornness or obstinacy. It is the quality of being unyielding, refusing to change one's opinion or behavior, and persisting in one's own way despite evidence or reason. This characteristic is detrimental to the soul, as it tarnishes its purity and prevents growth and development.
The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of humility, open-mindedness, and the willingness to accept the truth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of being open to different perspectives and seeking knowledge before making judgments or decisions.
Stubbornness can lead to arrogance and a closed mind, preventing individuals from benefiting from the wisdom and guidance of others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against arrogance in Surah Al-A'raf (7:146),
I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.
Stubbornness also hinders personal growth and spiritual development. The Quran encourages self-reflection and the willingness to change for the better. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18),
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us to constantly evaluate our actions, thoughts, and beliefs, and to strive for self-improvement.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the detrimental effects of stubbornness on the soul. When one clings to their own opinions without considering alternative perspectives or seeking the truth, they limit their intellectual and spiritual growth. They become stagnant and closed off from the vast knowledge and wisdom that Allah has provided.
Stubbornness can also lead to negative consequences in our relationships with others. It hinders effective communication, understanding, and compromise. The Quran emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes through peaceful means, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:114),
And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the detrimental effects of stubbornness on the soul. It tarnishes our character, hinders personal growth, and creates barriers in our relationships. The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of humility, open-mindedness, and the willingness to seek knowledge and truth. As Muslims, it is essential for us to reflect on our own attitudes and behaviors, and strive to cultivate a mindset of humility, flexibility, and willingness to learn and grow. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the harmful effects of stubbornness.
