The fruit of intellect is association with the virtuous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The fruit of intellect is association with the virtuous.
This profound statement highlights the significance of surrounding oneself with righteous and virtuous individuals in order to cultivate and enhance one's intellect.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (intellect) "عَقْلِ" refers to the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon human beings. It is through the intellect that we are able to comprehend and make sense of the world around us. The word (association) "صُحْبَةُ" refers to companionship or being in the company of others. And finally, the word (virtuous) "أخْيارِ" refers to those who possess moral excellence and righteousness.
To further understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with righteous individuals and seeking their company. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:28), Allah says,
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.
This verse encourages Muslims to associate with those who are devoted to the worship of Allah and to learn from their piety and dedication.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah advises the believers,
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the importance of being in the company of those who are obedient to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). By associating with the righteous, we are more likely to remain steadfast in our faith and find strength in our journey towards Allah's pleasure.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our intellect is not developed in isolation, but rather through the influence and guidance of virtuous individuals. When we surround ourselves with those who possess moral excellence, we are exposed to their wisdom, knowledge, and good character. Their positive influence can shape our thinking, behavior, and ultimately, our intellect.
By associating with the virtuous, we are motivated to strive for righteousness and emulate their noble qualities. Their piety serves as a source of inspiration and guidance, leading us towards a path of spiritual growth and intellectual development. We witness their actions, their dedication to worship, and their adherence to the teachings of Islam. This association encourages us to reflect upon our own actions and strive for improvement in our own lives.
Furthermore, the consequences of associating with the virtuous are profound. We are more likely to adopt their values, ethics, and principles, which in turn shape our own character. The virtuous individuals become our role models, and their positive influence helps us make better choices in our lives. We are motivated to engage in acts of kindness, seek knowledge, and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives. This association not only benefits us individually, but also contributes to the betterment of society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of surrounding ourselves with virtuous individuals in order to enhance our intellect. By associating with the righteous, we are exposed to their wisdom, knowledge, and good character, which in turn shapes our own thinking and behavior. This association motivates us to strive for righteousness, adopt their values, and make positive choices in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek the company of the virtuous and benefit from their guidance.
