راقِبِ العَواقِبَ تَنْجُ مِنَ المَعاطِبِ۔
Be careful of the outcomes and you will be saved from destruction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Outcomes)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
راقِبِ العَواقِبَ تَنْجُ مِنَ المَعاطِبِ۔
This can be translated as,
Be careful of the outcomes and you will be saved from destruction.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being mindful of the consequences of our actions and decisions.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (raqib) "راقِبِ" means to be watchful, vigilant, and observant. It implies being conscious and attentive to the potential outcomes of our choices. The term (al-'awaqib) "العَواقِبَ" refers to the consequences or results that follow our actions. And the word (tanj) "تَنْجُ" means to be saved or protected.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of considering the consequences of our actions. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us to be mindful of our deeds and to consider their implications for the future. It urges us to reflect upon our actions and their potential consequences, both in this world and in the Hereafter. By doing so, we can avoid falling into destructive patterns and ensure our salvation.
Another verse that aligns with the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), where Allah says,
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.
This verse highlights the importance of righteous actions and mutual counsel in attaining success and salvation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and deliberate in their choices. It encourages us to think beyond the immediate gratification of our desires and consider the long-term consequences of our actions. By being mindful of the outcomes, we can avoid pitfalls and destructive paths that may lead to our downfall.
For example, let's consider the decision to engage in dishonest business practices. If someone is only focused on short-term gains and disregards the potential consequences, they may find themselves facing legal troubles, damaged reputation, and loss of trust from others. However, if they are watchful of the outcomes and consider the ethical implications, they can make choices that align with Islamic principles and ensure long-term success and integrity.
Similarly, in our personal lives, being mindful of the outcomes can help us make wise decisions in relationships, education, and personal development. By considering the potential consequences of our actions, we can avoid harmful behaviors, maintain healthy relationships, and strive for personal growth.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of being watchful and mindful of the outcomes of our actions. By considering the potential consequences, we can make informed choices that lead to success and salvation. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly remind us to reflect upon our deeds and their implications. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to be vigilant and save us from destruction.
