سَلْ عَمّا لابُدَّ لَكَ مِنْ عِلْمِهِ، وَلاتُعْذَرُ في جَهْلِهِ۔
Ask about that which you must know and cannot be excused for being ignorant about.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and not making excuses for ignorance. Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The first word in the Hadith is (ask) "سَلْ". This word signifies the act of seeking knowledge actively and continuously. It encourages Muslims to be proactive in their pursuit of knowledge and to never be complacent or satisfied with what they already know. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge in the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar, Ayah 9, Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant.
The next important word in the Hadith is (knowledge) "عِلْمِهِ". This word encompasses all forms of knowledge, including religious, scientific, and practical knowledge. It is a comprehensive term that encompasses both theoretical and practical aspects. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and encourages Muslims to seek it. In Surah Al-Qalam, Ayah 5, Allah says,
Read in the name of your Lord who created.
This verse emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge through reading and learning.
The Hadith also mentions the word (ignorance) "جَهْلِهِ". This word refers to the state of being uninformed or lacking knowledge. It is a state that Muslims should strive to avoid, as ignorance can lead to misunderstandings, misconceptions, and even harmful actions. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Ayah 6, Allah says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse highlights the importance of verifying information and not acting out of ignorance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively seek knowledge and not make excuses for their ignorance. It motivates us to constantly strive for personal growth and development, both intellectually and spiritually. By seeking knowledge, we can better understand the teachings of Islam, strengthen our faith, and make informed decisions in our lives.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge are grave. Ignorance can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and even deviation from the true path of Islam. It can also hinder our ability to fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims and contribute positively to society. Therefore, it is incumbent upon every Muslim to seek knowledge and continuously educate themselves.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that seeking knowledge is not only a personal obligation but also a collective responsibility. As Muslims, we have a duty to educate ourselves and share our knowledge with others. By doing so, we can contribute to the betterment of our communities and the wider Muslim ummah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of actively seeking knowledge and not making excuses for ignorance. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to continuously strive for personal growth and development. By seeking knowledge, we can deepen our understanding of Islam, strengthen our faith, and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
