Hadith #8893

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أشْرَفُ الأقْوالِ الصِّدْقُ۔" This can be translated into English as,

The most honourable speech is the truth.

Let us now delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.

The word (ashrafu) "أشْرَفُ" in the Hadith refers to something that is noble, honorable, and superior. It signifies the highest level of excellence and distinction. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the unparalleled status of truthful speech.

The word (al-aqwal) "الأقْوالِ" refers to speech or words. It encompasses all forms of communication, whether spoken or written. It includes conversations, discussions, sermons, and any other means through which we express ourselves.

The word (as-sidq) "الصِّدْقُ" means truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty. It is the opposite of falsehood and deceit. Truthfulness is a fundamental virtue in Islam, and it holds great importance in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119),

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.

The Quranic ayat mentioned above highlights the significance of being truthful and surrounding ourselves with truthful individuals. It emphasizes the importance of aligning our words with the truth and being sincere in our speech.

And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to prioritize truthfulness in their speech, as it is the foundation of a righteous and virtuous society. By speaking the truth, we not only fulfill our moral obligations but also contribute to the betterment of our communities.
