اَلْمَوْعِظَةُ نَصيحَةٌ شافِيَةٌ۔
Admonition is a curative advice.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admonition)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْمَوْعِظَةُ نَصِيحَةٌ شَافِيَةٌ" which translates to
Admonition is a curative advice.
In this enlightening saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the healing power of sincere advice.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. "الْمَوْعِظَةُ" refers to admonition or counsel, which involves advising someone for their betterment and guidance. It is a form of sincere and well-intentioned advice that aims to rectify and improve a person's actions or beliefs. "نَصِيحَةٌ" means advice, counsel, or sincere counsel. It signifies the purity and sincerity of the advice being given. "شَافِيَةٌ" means curative or healing. It highlights the transformative and remedial nature of the advice, which has the power to heal and rectify.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 44:
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
This verse highlights the importance of practicing what we preach and advising others while also reflecting upon our own actions. It reminds us that admonition should not be limited to others but should also be applied to ourselves.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving sincere advice without harboring negative assumptions about others. It encourages Muslims to avoid backbiting and spying, as these actions are detrimental to the unity and well-being of the community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that sincere advice has the power to heal and rectify. When we offer counsel to others, we should do so with the intention of guiding them towards righteousness and helping them overcome their shortcomings. This advice should be rooted in sincerity, devoid of any personal agendas or ill intentions. Just as a curative medicine heals the body, sincere advice heals the soul and helps individuals grow spiritually.
Moreover, this Hadith also serves as a reminder that we should be open to receiving advice from others. Sometimes, we may be unaware of our own faults or blind spots. By humbly accepting and reflecting upon the advice given to us, we can rectify our actions and improve ourselves. This reciprocal relationship of giving and receiving advice fosters a culture of growth and self-improvement within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that sincere advice has the power to heal and rectify. It reminds us to offer counsel to others with pure intentions and to be open to receiving advice ourselves. By adhering to the principles of sincere advice, we can foster a community that is united, supportive, and constantly striving for self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to give and receive advice with sincerity and may He guide us all on the path of righteousness.
