(Ghurar al-Hikam: Submissiveness And Humility In Front Of Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ خَضَعَ لِعَظَمَةِ اللّهِ ذَلَّتْ لَهُ الرِّقابُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever is humble in front of the majesty of Allah, people become submissive to him.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (khada'a) "خَضَعَ" in the Hadith refers to humility or submission. It signifies the act of lowering oneself in front of the greatness and magnificence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This humility is not just an outward display, but a sincere and genuine state of the heart. It is a recognition of our own insignificance in comparison to the Almighty.
The phrase (azamatillah) "عَظَمَةِ اللّهِ" refers to the majesty and greatness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses His infinite power, wisdom, and authority over all creation. When one truly comprehends the magnitude of Allah's greatness, it naturally leads to a sense of humility and submission.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that when a person humbles themselves before Allah's majesty, (dallat lahu ar-riqab) "ذَلَّتْ لَهُ الرِّقابُ". This phrase can be understood as people becoming submissive to such an individual. When one displays true humility and submission to Allah, it has a profound effect on others. They are drawn towards this person and willingly submit to their authority and guidance.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of humility and submission before Allah. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 31:22)
And whoever humbles himself before Allah, then he has indeed grasped the most trustworthy handhold
This verse highlights that true strength lies in humbling oneself before Allah, and it becomes a means of attaining His support and guidance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 31:18)
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful
This verse reminds us to avoid arrogance and pride, as it is displeasing to Allah. Instead, we should adopt humility and treat others with kindness and respect.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact of humility on our relationships with others. When we humble ourselves before Allah, it reflects in our interactions with fellow Muslims and even non-Muslims. People are naturally drawn to those who display humility and are more likely to listen to their advice and follow their guidance.
For example, if a person in a position of authority or leadership demonstrates humility and acknowledges their dependence on Allah's guidance, their subordinates are more likely to respect and follow them. This is because humility creates an environment of trust, sincerity, and compassion, which are essential qualities for effective leadership.
Conversely, arrogance and pride repel people and hinder effective communication and cooperation. The Quran warns against such behavior and reminds us of the consequences it can have on our relationships. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:37)
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height
This verse serves as a reminder that no matter how great our achievements may be, we should always remain humble and grounded.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of humility before the majesty of Allah. When we truly humble ourselves before Him, it not only strengthens our relationship with Him but also has a profound impact on our interactions with others. Humility creates an environment of trust, respect, and submission, leading people to willingly follow and submit to those who display genuine humility. May Allah guide us all to embody true humility and submission in our lives.
