مَنْ كَثُرَتْ إحْسانُهُ أحَبَّهُ إخْوانُهُ۔
One whose kindness is abundant is loved by his brothers.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ كَثُرَتْ إحْسانُهُ أحَبَّهُ إخْوانُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose kindness is abundant is loved by his brothers.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of showing kindness and generosity towards others, as it leads to love and affection from one's fellow Muslims.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. "إحْسانُهُ" refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses all forms of benevolence, whether it be in words, actions, or intentions. "أحَبَّهُ" means to be loved or cherished. "إخْوانُهُ" refers to one's brothers, which in this context, refers to fellow Muslims.
The Quranic verses support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of kindness and generosity in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:263)
Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.
This verse highlights the superiority of kind words and forgiveness over mere acts of charity. It implies that kindness and forgiveness have a profound impact on building strong relationships and fostering love among Muslims.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:29)
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
This verse encourages Muslims to be generous and open-handed, rather than being miserly and withholding their wealth. By doing so, they not only avoid blame and criticism but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and love within the Muslim community.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound impact of kindness on the relationships between Muslims. When a person consistently demonstrates acts of kindness and benevolence towards others, they naturally earn the love and affection of their fellow brothers and sisters in faith. This love is not superficial or temporary but is rooted in genuine appreciation for the person's character and conduct.
For example, imagine a Muslim who is always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether it be through financial assistance, emotional support, or offering their time and skills. This person's selflessness and generosity will undoubtedly attract the love and admiration of their fellow Muslims. Their actions reflect the teachings of Islam and exemplify the qualities of compassion, empathy, and selflessness that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) embodied.
Conversely, a person who lacks kindness and compassion may find it difficult to establish strong bonds of love and brotherhood within the Muslim community. Their actions may create distance and animosity, leading to a lack of trust and affection from their fellow Muslims. Islam encourages Muslims to be mindful of their conduct and to strive towards embodying the qualities of kindness and generosity in all aspects of their lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of kindness and generosity in earning the love and affection of one's fellow Muslims. By consistently demonstrating acts of kindness and benevolence, Muslims can strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and foster a sense of unity within the Ummah. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the significance of kindness, forgiveness, and generosity in building strong and harmonious relationships. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to embody these qualities and earn the love and respect of our fellow Muslims.
