اَلْهَوى أعْظَمُ العَدُوَّيْنِ۔
Vain desire is the greater of the two enemies.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Vain desire is the greater of the two enemies.
This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the significance of recognizing and overcoming the power of our own desires and inclinations. By delving into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith, we can gain a deeper understanding of its message.
The term "vain desire" is translated from the Arabic word (ٱلْهَوَى) "al-hawa". "Al-hawa" refers to one's whims, passions, and base desires that can lead a person astray from the path of righteousness. It encompasses the inclinations of the ego, the pursuit of worldly pleasures, and the attachment to material possessions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that these desires can become our greatest enemies if we allow them to control our actions and decisions.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the consequences of following our vain desires:
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) acknowledges the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and highlights the importance of seeking His mercy and forgiveness to overcome it.
In Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of following our vain desires:
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their own desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
This verse emphasizes that those who follow their own desires without seeking guidance from Allah are misguided and prone to wrongdoing.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the consequences of succumbing to our vain desires. When we prioritize our own whims and desires over the guidance of Allah, we become susceptible to making choices that are detrimental to our spiritual growth and well-being. Our desires can cloud our judgment, lead us away from the straight path, and hinder our progress towards attaining closeness to Allah.
Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to recognize the power of their own desires and take proactive measures to overcome them. This requires self-discipline, self-reflection, and a constant striving to align our desires with the teachings of Islam. By seeking knowledge, practicing self-restraint, and turning to Allah in prayer and supplication, we can weaken the hold of our vain desires and strengthen our connection with the Divine.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that our own desires can be our greatest enemies. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can strive to overcome our vain desires and attain spiritual growth and inner peace. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our desires and remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.
