إنّي لَعَلى يَقين مِنْ رَبّي، وغَيْرِ شُبْهَة في ديني۔
Verily I am upon complete certitude from my Lord and do not have any doubt about my religion.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a impactful Hadith that reflects his unwavering faith and certainty in his religion. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its important words and their meanings in light of the Quran.
The first word we shall examine is (yaqeen) "يَقِين", which translates to "certitude" or "conviction." Yaqeen is a state of absolute certainty and firm belief that is free from any doubt or hesitation. It is the pinnacle of faith, where one's heart and mind are completely convinced of the truth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to seek yaqeen in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) affirms that his yaqeen is from his Lord, emphasizing the divine origin and source of his unwavering conviction. This statement echoes the Quranic verse in Surah Al-An'am (6:116), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) yaqeen is not based on mere assumptions or conjectures but is firmly rooted in divine guidance.
The second important word in the Hadith is (shubah) "شُبْهَة", which translates to "doubt" or "uncertainty." Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) declares that he does not have any shubah in his religion. This statement highlights his impeccable knowledge and understanding of Islam, as well as his complete trust in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the divine guidance of the Quran.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of avoiding doubt and uncertainty in matters of faith. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Doubt and negative assumptions can lead to sin and harm the unity of the Muslim community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds immense significance for Muslims. It serves as a reminder to strive for yaqeen and to seek knowledge and understanding of our religion. It encourages us to have unwavering faith in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the guidance of the Quran, without allowing doubts or uncertainties to cloud our belief.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) firm conviction in his religion had profound consequences in his life. It guided his actions, decisions, and interactions with others. His unwavering faith allowed him to stand against falsehood and injustice, even in the face of adversity. His knowledge and understanding of Islam enabled him to provide profound insights and guidance to the Muslim community.
As Muslims, we should reflect upon Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement and strive to attain the same level of yaqeen in our faith. We should seek knowledge, study the Quran, and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny. By doing so, we can strengthen our conviction, avoid doubts, and navigate the challenges of life with steadfastness and certainty.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to attain yaqeen in our faith and guide us on the straight path. Ameen.
