رَأسُ السُّخْفِ العُنْفُ۔
The height of folly is violence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Violence)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "رَأسُ السُّخْفِ العُنْفُ۔" This can be translated as
The height of folly is violence.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (sukhf) "سُخْفِ" in Arabic refers to foolishness, stupidity, or ignorance. It represents actions or behaviors that lack wisdom, reason, or understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that the pinnacle of such foolishness is manifested through violence. The word (unf) "عُنْفُ" in Arabic refers to aggression, oppression, or injustice. It encompasses any act of force or harm inflicted upon others without a just cause.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of peace, justice, and forbearance. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.
This verse highlights the obligation upon Muslims to uphold justice and fairness, even in the face of animosity or enmity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah reminds us,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means and seeking justice for the oppressed.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in his amazing Hadith highlights the foolishness of resorting to violence as a means of resolving disputes or asserting power. Violence only leads to further harm, destruction, and loss of life. It is a manifestation of ignorance and a failure to utilize wisdom and reason in dealing with conflicts.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, provides us with a powerful reminder that violence is the height of folly. Instead, he encourages us to seek peaceful resolutions, to exercise patience and forbearance, and to uphold justice in all our interactions. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
Let us reflect on this Hadith and strive to embody the teachings of peace, justice, and wisdom in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to overcome ignorance and violence. May we be among those who promote peace, justice, and understanding in the world.
