اَلمَصائِبُ بِالسَّوِيَّةِ مَقْسُومَةٌ بَيْنَ البَريَّةِ۔
Hardships are divided equally among the creatures.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
المصائب بالسوية مقسومة بين البرية
which translates to
Hardships are divided equally among the creatures.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the universal nature of difficulties and trials that all beings, human and non-human, experience in this world.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse emphasizes that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of the capabilities and limitations of His creation. He does not impose hardships upon us that are beyond our capacity to endure. This divine wisdom ensures that the distribution of hardships is fair and just.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are an integral part of our journey of faith. They serve as tests to strengthen our resolve, purify our souls, and increase our spiritual growth. These tests are not exclusive to a particular group of people but are experienced by all individuals, regardless of their status or background.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also aligns with the concept of divine justice and equality emphasized in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 25, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
We sent messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers.
This verse highlights that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has sent messengers to guide humanity and ensure that everyone has access to the message of truth. Similarly, hardships are distributed equally among all creatures, regardless of their social status or position, ensuring that no one can claim unfair treatment or inequality in the face of trials.
The understanding of this Hadith goes beyond the mere acknowledgment of the existence of hardships. It serves as a reminder that the difficulties we face in life are not arbitrary or random. They are a part of a divine plan that aims to shape our character, strengthen our faith, and ultimately lead us to spiritual growth. By recognizing that hardships are distributed equally among all creatures, we are encouraged to face our challenges with patience, resilience, and trust in Allah's wisdom and mercy.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. Every individual, regardless of their position or background, experiences their fair share of difficulties. This understanding should foster empathy and compassion among Muslims, as we realize that we are all united in our shared experiences of hardship.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that hardships are a universal reality, equally distributed among all creatures. This understanding aligns with the Quranic teachings of divine justice, equality, and the purpose of trials in our lives. By recognizing this truth, we can face our challenges with patience, knowing that they are a means of spiritual growth and a test of our faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through the trials of life and emerge stronger in our faith.
