أفْضَلُ الدّينِ اليَقينُ۔
The best faith is certitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best faith is certitude.
This concise statement holds meaning and serves as a guiding principle for Muslims in understanding the essence of true faith.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "faith" in Arabic is (دّين) "deen". It encompasses the entire system of beliefs, practices, and values that constitute a person's religious commitment. It is the foundation upon which a person's relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is built.
The word "certitude" in Arabic is (يَقِين) "yaqeen". It refers to a state of absolute conviction and unwavering belief. It is the highest level of faith, where doubts and uncertainties are eradicated, and one's heart is filled with complete trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wisdom and guidance.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of certitude in one's faith. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (49:15)
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights the correlation between certitude and sincerity. True believers are those who possess unwavering faith and are willing to sacrifice their wealth and lives for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their actions are driven by their firm conviction in the truth of Islam.
Another verse that supports the concept of certitude is found in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah says, (2:2)
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.
Here, Allah affirms the certainty and infallibility of the Quran, emphasizing the importance of unwavering belief in His divine message.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true faith is not merely a matter of rituals or outward appearances. It is a deep-rooted conviction that permeates every aspect of our lives. When we have certitude in our faith, we are motivated to seek knowledge, strive for righteousness, and fulfill our obligations as Muslims.
Certitude in faith has profound consequences in our lives. It brings about a sense of tranquility and inner peace, as we trust in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) plan and rely on His guidance. It strengthens our relationship with Allah, as we surrender ourselves completely to His will and submit to His commands.
Moreover, certitude empowers us to face challenges and trials with resilience and patience. When we are certain of Allah's promise of reward and His ultimate justice, we are able to endure hardships and remain steadfast in our faith.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating certitude in our faith. It is not enough to simply go through the motions of worship; we must strive to deepen our understanding and strengthen our conviction. By seeking knowledge, reflecting on the Quran, and emulating the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can attain the highest level of faith - the certitude that leads to salvation.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to develop unwavering certitude in our faith and guide us on the straight path. Ameen.
