Hadith #4820

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The cause of poverty is extravagance.

This enlightening saying highlights the relationship between extravagance and poverty. To fully understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words used.

The word (faqr) "فَقْرِ" refers to poverty or destitution. It signifies a state of lacking material resources or being in need. Poverty is a condition that affects individuals and societies, hindering their ability to meet their basic needs and live a dignified life.

The word (israf) "إسْرافُ" means extravagance or wastefulness. It refers to excessive spending, indulgence in luxuries, and squandering resources beyond what is necessary or beneficial. Extravagance is a behavior that leads to the misuse and depletion of wealth, resulting in financial difficulties and ultimately poverty.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against extravagance in several verses, emphasizing the importance of moderation and balance in our lives.

In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah says,

O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

This verse highlights the need for moderation in our consumption and warns against indulging in excessive and unnecessary luxuries.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:29), Allah says,

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

This verse cautions against both miserliness and extravagance, as both extremes can lead to financial difficulties and a state of insolvency.

The consequences of extravagance are evident in both individual and societal contexts. On an individual level, excessive spending and wastefulness can deplete one's resources, leaving them in a state of poverty. Moreover, it can lead to a cycle of debt and financial instability, making it difficult to escape the clutches of poverty.

When a few individuals or groups indulge in extravagant lifestyles, resources become concentrated in their hands, leaving others deprived and marginalized. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the cause and effect relationship between extravagance and poverty in this Hadith. By recognizing the detrimental consequences of extravagance, we are encouraged to adopt a balanced and moderate approach in our lives.
