آفَةُ الحَديثِ الكِذْبُ۔
The bane of speech is lying.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ الحَديثِ الكِذْبُ۔" This can be translated as,
The bane of speech is lying.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something that is harmful, destructive, or detrimental. It signifies a negative consequence or an affliction that arises from a particular action. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the severe harm and damage caused by lying.
Lying is a grave sin in Islam, as it goes against the principles of truthfulness and honesty that are emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42),
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This verse clearly commands Muslims to refrain from distorting the truth or hiding it knowingly.
Furthermore, the Quran describes lying as a characteristic of the hypocrites. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
This verse highlights the spiritual sickness that lies within the hearts of those who persistently engage in falsehood.
Lying not only harms the individual who utters it but also has far-reaching consequences for society as a whole. It erodes trust, breaks relationships, and leads to the spread of corruption and injustice. The Quran warns against the destructive nature of lying in Surah An-Nahl (16:105),
Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of truthfulness in all aspects of life. It urges us to be mindful of our words and to speak only that which is true and beneficial. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself emphasized the significance of truthfulness, saying,
Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.
By adhering to the principle of truthfulness, we not only fulfill our moral obligations but also contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. The Quran encourages Muslims to speak the truth and stand up for justice, as stated in Surah Al-Maida (5:8),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of lying. It highlights the importance of truthfulness in Islam and urges Muslims to uphold this virtue in all aspects of their lives. By speaking the truth and avoiding falsehood, we not only fulfill our religious obligations but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be truthful in our speech and actions.
