Hadith #1204

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لا إيمانَ لِمَنْ لا أمانَةَ لَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

There is no faith in one who is not trustworthy.

This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in the realm of faith.

Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith by examining its key words. The word (Iman) "إيمان" refers to faith or belief in Islam. It encompasses not only the belief in the existence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also the acceptance of His guidance and the adherence to His commandments. The word (Amanah) "أمانة" refers to trustworthiness, honesty, and fulfilling one's responsibilities and obligations.

To further understand the significance of trustworthiness in Islam, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the believers, stating in verse 8:

And who are watchful of their trusts and their covenants.

This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling one's trusts and obligations, which is an essential aspect of trustworthiness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 34, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse emphasizes the significance of fulfilling commitments and obligations, as they will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the inseparable connection between faith and trustworthiness. A person who lacks trustworthiness cannot truly possess faith. This is because trustworthiness is a fundamental characteristic of a believer. It is a reflection of one's sincerity, integrity, and commitment to the teachings of Islam.

When a person is trustworthy, they inspire confidence and reliability. They fulfill their promises, protect the rights of others, and act with honesty and transparency in all their dealings. Such individuals are a source of stability and harmony in society. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for trustworthiness in all aspects of their lives. It encompasses not only financial transactions but also includes fulfilling responsibilities towards family, friends, and society at large.
