(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
It is in trusting Allah that the true essence of conviction lies.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of placing our complete trust and reliance in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain true conviction in our faith.
Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (tawakkul) "تَوَكُّل" refers to complete reliance and trust in Allah. It entails surrendering our affairs to Him, knowing that He is the ultimate controller of all outcomes. The word (haqiqah) "حَقِيقَة" means the true essence or reality of something. And (i'tiqan) "إِيقَان" signifies firm conviction or certainty.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of tawakkul and its connection to true faith. In Surah Al-Talaq, verse 3, Allah says,
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse highlights that when we place our trust in Allah, He becomes our ultimate source of support and protection.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 2, Allah states,
Indeed, the believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.
This verse highlights the correlation between reliance on Allah and the increase in faith. When we trust in Allah, our faith strengthens, and we become more steadfast in our beliefs.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that true conviction lies in trusting Allah completely. When we place our trust in Him, we acknowledge His infinite wisdom, knowledge, and power. We recognize that He is the best planner and the ultimate source of guidance. This trust leads to a deep sense of peace and contentment, knowing that Allah is in control of all affairs.
Trusting in Allah does not mean that we sit idle and do nothing. Rather, it means that we strive our best, while recognizing that the ultimate outcome is in Allah's hands. We take necessary actions, but we do not rely solely on our own efforts. We trust that Allah will guide us, protect us, and grant us success in accordance with His divine plan.
This Hadith also highlights the consequences of trusting in Allah. When we have true conviction and rely on Allah, we are freed from the shackles of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. We find solace in the knowledge that Allah is always with us, guiding and supporting us. This trust enables us to face challenges with courage and resilience, knowing that Allah's help is near.
Moreover, trusting in Allah strengthens our relationship with Him. It deepens our faith and fosters a sense of closeness to our Creator. We develop a profound understanding of His attributes, such as His mercy, wisdom, and justice. This understanding further strengthens our conviction and solidifies our trust in Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true conviction lies in trusting Allah completely. By placing our reliance in Him, we acknowledge His infinite wisdom and power. This trust leads to a deep sense of peace and contentment, freeing us from fear and anxiety. It strengthens our faith and fosters a closer relationship with our Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to trust Him wholeheartedly and attain true conviction in our faith.
