اَلصَّبْرُ صبْرانِ: صَبْرٌ عَلى ما تَكْرَهُ، وصَبْرٌ عَمّا تُحِبُّ۔
Patience is of two types: enduring what you hate and abstaining from what you love.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Patience is of two types: enduring what you hate and abstaining from what you love.
This wise utterance highlights the essence of patience and its two fundamental aspects.
The word (sabr) "صَبْرٌ" is the Arabic term used for patience in this Hadith. It encompasses the idea of enduring and persevering in the face of difficulties, hardships, and trials. It is a virtue highly emphasized in Islam, as it helps Muslims maintain composure and steadfastness in times of adversity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that patience can be categorized into two types. The first type is (sabrun 'ala ma takrah)
صَبْرٌ عَلَى مَا تَكْرَهُ
which means enduring or being patient with what you dislike or find difficult. This could include enduring physical pain, emotional distress, or facing challenges that go against one's desires or preferences.
The second type of patience is (sabrun 'amma tuhibbu) "صَبْرٌ عَمَّا تُحِبُّ", which means abstaining or being patient in refraining from what you love or desire. This could refer to restraining oneself from engaging in sinful actions or giving up worldly pleasures for the sake of Allah's pleasure.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and its rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, Allah says,
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse highlights the need for patience in times of trials and tribulations, assuring the believers of the rewards that await them.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl, verse 96, Allah says,
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience in performing righteous deeds and enduring hardships for the sake of Allah's pleasure. It assures the believers that Allah will bestow His love and mercy upon them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate patience in their lives. It encourages them to remain steadfast in the face of adversity and to control their desires and impulses. By enduring what they dislike and abstaining from what they love, Muslims can strengthen their faith, develop self-discipline, and attain higher levels of spirituality.
For example, a person may find it challenging to wake up for Fajr prayer due to the comfort of sleep. By practicing patience and resisting the temptation to stay in bed, they demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling their religious obligations. This act of patience not only strengthens their relationship with Allah but also instills discipline and self-control in their daily lives.
Similarly, a person may face difficulties in their personal relationships or professional endeavors. By practicing patience and enduring these challenges with grace and resilience, they can maintain harmony, seek solutions, and grow as individuals. Patience allows them to navigate through life's trials with wisdom and maturity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the two types of patience: enduring what you hate and abstaining from what you love. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate patience in their lives, enabling them to face difficulties with resilience and to control their desires and impulses. By practicing patience, Muslims can strengthen their faith, develop self-discipline, and attain higher levels of spirituality. May Allah grant us the ability to embody the true essence of patience in all aspects of our lives.
