اَلسَّخاءُ خُلُقُ الأنْبِياءِ۔
Generosity is a quality of the Prophets.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "السَّخاءُ خُلُقُ الأنْبِياءِ" which translates to
Generosity is a quality of the Prophets.
This wise utterance highlights the significance of generosity and its association with the noble character of the Prophets.
The word (sakhā') "السَّخاءُ" refers to generosity, liberality, and magnanimity. It is the act of giving freely and abundantly, without any expectation of return or reward. Generosity is not limited to material possessions but encompasses all forms of benevolence, including kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
The term (khuluq) "خُلُقُ" refers to character or disposition. It represents the inherent qualities and traits that define an individual's behavior and actions. It is the essence of one's moral and ethical nature.
When we examine the Quran, we find numerous verses that emphasize the importance of generosity and its association with the Prophets. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:92),
By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give (freely) of that which you love, and whatever you give, Allah knows it well.
This verse highlights the necessity of giving and the connection between righteousness and generosity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse illustrates the concept of generosity as a means of multiplying blessings and rewards from Allah.
Imam Ali's statement highlights the fact that generosity is not merely a commendable trait, but rather an essential characteristic of the Prophets. The Prophets were chosen by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to guide humanity and exemplify the highest moral standards. Their generosity was not limited to material possessions, but extended to their time, knowledge, and compassion.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this quality of generosity throughout his life. He was known to be extremely generous, always ready to help those in need, and never hesitated to give whatever he had. His generosity was not limited to the Muslim community but extended to people of all backgrounds and faiths.
Imam Ali's generosity had profound consequences. It inspired others to follow his example and created a society based on compassion and care for one another. His generosity motivated individuals to give selflessly, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among Muslims. It also served as a means of spreading Islam, as people were attracted to the noble character of Imam Ali and the teachings he embodied.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of generosity in their own lives. It encourages us to be more giving, not only in terms of material possessions but also in our time, knowledge, and compassion. Generosity is a means of purifying our souls, strengthening our faith, and earning the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of generosity as a quality of the Prophets. It highlights the importance of giving freely and abundantly, without any expectation of return. By examining the Quranic verses that support this concept, we understand that generosity is not only commendable but also essential for attaining righteousness and multiplying blessings. Following the example of Imam Ali and the Prophets, Muslims are encouraged to embody the spirit of generosity in all aspects of their lives, thereby creating a society based on compassion, care, and unity.
