اَلبَغْيُ يُوجِبُ الدِّمارَ۔
Oppression leads to destruction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البغي يوجب الدمار", which translates to
Oppression leads to destruction.
This beautiful Hadith holds great significance and carries a powerful message for all Muslims.
To fully understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-baghi) "البغي" refers to oppression, transgression, or injustice. It encompasses any act of wrongdoing or violation of the rights of others. (yujib) "يوجب" means to necessitate or lead to, while (ad-damar) "الدمار" denotes destruction, ruin, or downfall.
The Quran, the ultimate source of guidance for Muslims, provides numerous verses that emphasize the consequences of oppression and the importance of justice. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Anfal (8:25),
And fear the affliction which does not befall exclusively those among you who have done wrong; and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse highlights that the consequences of oppression are not limited to the wrongdoers alone, but they can affect the entire society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining justice and avoiding corruption after a society has been reformed. Oppression and transgression lead to corruption, which ultimately results in destruction.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the severe consequences of oppression. When individuals or societies engage in acts of injustice, they sow the seeds of their own destruction. Oppression breeds resentment, division, and chaos, ultimately leading to the downfall of individuals, communities, and nations.
History is replete with examples that demonstrate the truth of this Hadith. The tyrannical rulers who oppressed their people, such as Pharaoh and Nimrod, ultimately met their demise and brought destruction upon themselves and their societies. Conversely, those who upheld justice and fought against oppression, like the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), became beacons of light and sources of guidance for humanity.
As Muslims, we are called upon to stand firmly against oppression and to strive for justice in all aspects of our lives. We must remember that our actions have consequences, not only in this world but also in the Hereafter. Oppression not only harms the victims but also tarnishes the soul of the oppressor, leading to spiritual destruction.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims to uphold justice and avoid oppression. It highlights the inherent connection between oppression and destruction, both in this world and the Hereafter. Let us strive to be individuals who promote justice, peace, and harmony, and work towards building a society free from oppression, for it is through justice that we can attain true success and salvation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the destructive consequences of oppression.
