قَدْ يَسْتَقيمُ المُعَوَّجُ۔
At times the crooked may become straight.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Crooked)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "قَدْ يَسْتَقيمُ المُعَوَّجُ۔" This can be translated as,
At times the crooked may become straight.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (mu'awwaj) "مُعَوَّجُ" in this Hadith refers to something that is bent, twisted, or crooked. It signifies a deviation from the straight path, whether it be in terms of beliefs, actions, or character. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the possibility of transformation, where even those who are astray or misguided can find their way back to the straight path.
This concept of transformation is beautifully illustrated in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:53),
That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves.
This verse emphasizes that Allah's guidance is always available, and it is up to individuals to change their own hearts and actions in order to receive it. Thus, even those who are deviated or crooked have the potential to rectify themselves and return to the straight path.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that Allah's mercy and forgiveness are vast and encompassing. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse reassures us that no matter how far we have strayed, Allah's mercy is always within reach. It is a reminder that even the crooked can find their way back to the straight path through sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a motivation for us to never lose hope in the guidance and forgiveness of Allah. It reminds us that no matter how lost or misguided we may feel, there is always a chance for transformation and rectification. We should never underestimate the power of repentance and the ability to change ourselves for the better.
The consequences of embracing this Hadith are profound. It encourages us to have empathy and compassion towards those who may be astray or deviated. Instead of condemning or judging them, we should strive to guide them back to the straight path through wisdom, kindness, and patience. It reminds us that we should never give up on anyone, as Allah's mercy has the power to transform even the most crooked of hearts.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can also apply it to our own lives. It serves as a reminder to constantly evaluate our own beliefs, actions, and character. We should strive to rectify any crookedness within ourselves, seeking self-improvement and growth. It reminds us to be humble and acknowledge that we too have the potential to deviate, but with Allah's guidance, we can always find our way back to the straight path.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
At times the crooked may become straight
emphasizes the possibility of transformation and rectification for those who are astray or deviated. It reminds us of Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and the potential for change. This Hadith motivates us to guide others with compassion and reflect on our own actions, striving to rectify any crookedness within ourselves. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the straight path and grant us the ability to rectify ourselves and help others find their way.
