(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الإحسان إلى المسيء يستصلح العدو

which translates to

Doing good to the one who offends [you] reforms the enemy.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the power of kindness and benevolence, even towards those who may have wronged us.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (al-ihsan) "الإحسان" refers to acts of goodness, excellence, and kindness. It encompasses going above and beyond in one's actions, treating others with compassion and generosity. (al-musi') "المسيء" refers to the one who offends or harms others. It refers to someone who may have caused harm, whether physically, emotionally, or verbally. (yastaslih) "يستصلح" means to reform, reconcile, or rectify. It signifies the positive transformation that occurs when one responds to harm with kindness and forgiveness. (al-'adu) "العدو" refers to the enemy or adversary, someone who may have ill intentions towards us.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Fussilat (41:34),

Repel evil with that which is better. Then the one whom between you and him is enmity will become as though he was a devoted friend.

This verse echoes the message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, emphasizing the power of responding to harm with goodness. By choosing to do good to those who have wronged us, we have the potential to transform enemies into friends, fostering reconciliation and harmony.

Another verse that aligns with the teachings of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with righteousness and justice, regardless of their actions towards us. It encourages Muslims to embody the values of kindness and fairness, even towards those who may not share our beliefs or may have caused harm.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder of the immense power of forgiveness and compassion. It teaches us that responding to harm with kindness has the potential to bring about positive change and reconciliation. By choosing to do good to those who offend us, we not only elevate our own character but also create an opportunity for the transformation of our adversaries.

When we respond to harm with kindness, we break the cycle of negativity and animosity. Our actions have the potential to inspire reflection and remorse in the one who has wronged us. By extending a hand of goodwill, we open the door for dialogue and understanding, paving the way for reconciliation and the mending of relationships.

Furthermore, responding to harm with goodness aligns with the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of forgiveness and mercy. Prophet Muhammad () said,

The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger.

This Hadith highlights the strength of character required to respond to harm with kindness. It requires self-control and the ability to rise above our own emotions.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the transformative power of responding to harm with goodness. By choosing to do good to those who offend us, we have the potential to reform our enemies and foster reconciliation. This teaching is in line with the Quranic emphasis on repelling evil with that which is better and treating others with righteousness and justice. May we strive to embody these teachings in our daily lives, seeking to spread kindness and forgiveness, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness.
