اَلصَّبْرُ ظَفَرٌ، اَلعَجَلُ خَطَرٌ۔
Patience is a victory; haste [and impatience] is a danger.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Patience is a victory; haste [and impatience] is a danger.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of patience in our lives and warns against the dangers of impatience and haste. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the word (صَبْرُ) "sabr", which is translated as "patience." Sabr is not merely the ability to endure hardships, but it encompasses a state of inner strength, perseverance, and steadfastness. It is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of trials and tribulations, and to have trust in Allah's plan. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of sabr and its rewards. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
On the other hand, the word (عَجَلُ) "ajal" is translated as "haste" or "impatience." It refers to acting hastily without proper consideration or reflection. Impatience often leads to making rash decisions, neglecting important details, and disregarding the consequences of our actions. The Quran warns against the dangers of haste in Surah Al-Isra (17:11),
And man prays for evil as he ought to pray for good, and man is ever hasty.
Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. Patience is indeed a victory because it enables us to overcome challenges and adversities with grace and resilience. It allows us to maintain our composure, seek guidance from Allah, and make wise decisions. Patience is not a sign of weakness, but rather a manifestation of inner strength and trust in Allah's plan. It is through patience that we can attain success and attain victory over our own selves.
Conversely, haste and impatience are dangerous because they often lead to regrettable outcomes. When we act hastily, we are more prone to making mistakes, overlooking important details, and causing harm to ourselves and others. Impatience blinds us from considering the consequences of our actions and prevents us from making sound judgments. It is a trap that can lead us astray from the right path.
To illustrate the consequences of impatience, let us turn to the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites. When Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) went to Mount Sinai to receive the commandments from Allah, the Israelites became impatient and began worshiping the golden calf. Their impatience led them to deviate from the path of righteousness and incur the wrath of Allah. This serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of haste and the importance of patience in our spiritual journey.
In our daily lives, we often encounter situations that test our patience. It could be a difficult colleague at work, a challenging family member, or a personal setback. In these moments, we must remember the words of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to cultivate patience within ourselves. By doing so, we can navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and grace, and ultimately attain victory over our own selves.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the significance of patience and the dangers of impatience. Patience is a virtue that brings us closer to Allah and enables us to overcome difficulties. It is a victory that leads to success and tranquility. On the other hand, haste and impatience can lead us astray and cause harm. Let us strive to embody the virtue of patience in our lives and seek Allah's guidance in all our endeavors. May Allah grant us the strength to be patient and protect us from the perils of impatience.
