(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

فِي العَدْلِ صَلاحُ البَرِيَّةِ۔

This can be translated as,

In justice there is betterment of the people.

This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance and benefits of justice in society.

The word (justice) "عَدْلِ" is derived from the root word "عَدَلَ" which means to be fair, equitable, and balanced. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam and is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands Muslims to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 135, Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

This verse highlights the importance of justice and the obligation to uphold it, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones.

The word (betterment) "صَلاحُ" refers to improvement, rectification, and harmony. It signifies the positive impact that justice has on individuals and society as a whole. When justice is established, it leads to social cohesion, peace, and prosperity. In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 25, Allah says,

Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.

Here, Allah emphasizes that the purpose of sending messengers and revealing scriptures is to establish justice among people.

Imam Ali's statement highlights the profound connection between justice and the well-being of society. When justice prevails, people are treated fairly and equitably, regardless of their social status, wealth, or background. This fosters a sense of trust, unity, and harmony among individuals, leading to a peaceful and prosperous society.

Furthermore, justice is not limited to the legal system but extends to all aspects of life, including interpersonal relationships, economic transactions, and governance. In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 8, Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice in dealing with others, even if they may hold animosity towards us.

Imam Ali's amazing Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize justice in their lives and strive for its establishment in society. It calls upon individuals to be fair, equitable, and balanced in their dealings with others, regardless of their differences. By upholding justice, Muslims contribute to the betterment of society, fostering an environment of peace, harmony, and prosperity.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

In justice there is betterment of the people

emphasizes the importance of justice in Islam. It highlights the positive impact that justice has on individuals and society, fostering unity, trust, and harmony. Muslims are reminded to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives, treating others fairly and equitably. By doing so, they contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill their duty as believers. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to establish justice in our lives and strive for a just society.
