(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sitting Back)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّ قاعِد عَمّا يَسُرُّهُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

Many a person sits back from that which would delight him.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (qa'id) "قاعِد" in this Hadith refers to a person who remains idle or passive, not taking any action. The word (amma) "عَمّا" means "from" or "about," and (yasurruhu) "يَسُرُّهُ" means "delights him" or "brings him joy." Thus, the Hadith is highlighting the tendency of individuals to refrain from pursuing things that would bring them happiness or contentment.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of actively seeking and pursuing that which brings us joy and fulfillment in life. It encourages us to overcome our inertia and take action towards achieving our goals and aspirations. It serves as a reminder that we should not let opportunities for happiness pass us by due to laziness, fear, or complacency.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:200),

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of perseverance and taking active steps towards success, rather than sitting back and hoping for things to fall into place.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in our endeavors, while also emphasizing the need for determination and action.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to actively pursue that which brings them joy and fulfillment in life. It encourages us to overcome our fears, doubts, and laziness, and to take decisive action towards achieving our goals. By doing so, we can experience the blessings and contentment that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us.

For example, if a person has a talent or passion for a particular field, such as art, writing, or sports, but chooses to sit back and not pursue it, they may miss out on the joy and fulfillment that could come from developing and sharing their skills. By taking action and actively engaging in their passion, they can experience personal growth, self-expression, and a sense of accomplishment.

Similarly, in matters of faith, if a person sits back and does not actively seek knowledge, engage in acts of worship, or strive to improve their character, they may miss out on the spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that comes from actively practicing and living their faith. By taking the initiative to learn, pray, give charity, and engage in acts of kindness, they can experience a deeper connection with their Creator and a greater sense of peace and contentment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of actively pursuing that which brings us joy and fulfillment in life. It encourages us to overcome our inertia and take decisive action towards achieving our goals and aspirations. By doing so, we can experience the blessings and contentment that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and motivation to actively seek that which brings us happiness and success.
