كُلَّما فاتَكَ مِنَ الدُّنيا شَيْءٌ فَهُوَ غَنيمَةٌ۔
Every time something of this world slips away from you, it is an advantage [and a blessing].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Kullama fataka minad-dunya shay'un fahuwa ghaneemah.
This Hadith emphasizes the concept that whenever something from this worldly life slips away or is lost, it is actually a gain or a blessing. Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "fataka" in the Hadith refers to something slipping away or being lost. It implies the loss of material possessions, worldly desires, or any other transient aspect of this life. This loss is not to be mourned or seen as a deprivation, but rather as a gain or a blessing. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that detachment from worldly possessions and desires is a means of attaining spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support this profound concept. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201),
And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'
This verse highlights the importance of seeking goodness in both this world and the Hereafter. However, the true goodness lies in the spiritual growth and the closeness to Allah, which can be achieved by letting go of worldly attachments.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse reminds us that material possessions and worldly desires are merely temporary adornments of this life. The true value lies in the enduring good deeds that we perform, which will benefit us in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds immense wisdom and guidance for us as Muslims. When we experience loss or detachment from worldly possessions, it is an opportunity for us to reflect and redirect our focus towards the eternal and everlasting rewards of the Hereafter. By detaching ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world, we can attain a higher level of spirituality and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
For example, if we lose a significant amount of wealth, instead of becoming despondent, we can view it as an opportunity to detach ourselves from the love of material possessions and redirect our focus towards acts of charity and helping those in need. This loss can serve as a motivation to increase our reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His blessings and provisions.
Moreover, this Hadith teaches us the importance of contentment and gratitude. When we recognize that every loss or detachment from this world is actually a gain or a blessing, it instills within us a sense of contentment with whatever Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has decreed for us. We learn to be grateful for the blessings we have and not be attached to the fleeting nature of worldly possessions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that every time something of this world slips away from us, it is not a loss but rather a gain or a blessing. Through detachment from worldly possessions and desires, we can attain spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the transient nature of this world and the importance of focusing on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to detach ourselves from the love of this world and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
