وَلَدُ السُّوءِ يَعُرُّ السَّلَفَ، ويُفْسِدُ الخَلَفَ۔
An evil child dishonours one’s ancestors and corrupts one’s descendants.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Child)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
An evil child dishonours one’s ancestors and corrupts one’s descendants.
This profound statement highlights the significance of the impact that an individual's actions can have on both their past and future generations.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (waledu) "وَلَدُ" refers to a child or offspring. (assoo) "السُّوءِ" means evil or wickedness. (ya'urru) "يَعُرُّ" signifies dishonoring or disrespecting. (assalaf) "السَّلَفَ" refers to one's ancestors. Lastly, (yufsidu) "يُفْسِدُ" means corrupting or causing harm.
To better understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and protection in all aspects of our lives, including the upbringing of our children.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Wealth and children are an adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds that last are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.
This verse reminds us that while children are a blessing, it is the righteous deeds and actions that truly matter and have a lasting impact.
Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. An evil child, one who is disobedient, immoral, or engages in harmful actions, dishonors their ancestors. This dishonor is not limited to disrespecting their lineage or heritage, but it also tarnishes the reputation and legacy of their forefathers. It is a betrayal of the values and principles that were passed down through generations.
Moreover, the Hadith highlights that an evil child corrupts their descendants. This corruption can manifest in various ways, such as perpetuating negative behaviors, breaking familial bonds, or leading future generations astray from the path of righteousness. The consequences of such corruption can be far-reaching and have a detrimental impact on the entire family lineage.
It is essential for Muslims to understand the weight of their actions and the influence they have on their children and future generations. As parents, it is our responsibility to instill in our children the values of Islam, righteousness, and moral conduct. By nurturing them in an environment of love, guidance, and discipline, we can help them grow into individuals who honor their ancestors and positively impact their descendants.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder of the profound connection between our actions and their consequences on both our past and future generations. It emphasizes the importance of raising righteous children who will carry forward the legacy of their ancestors and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to fulfill this responsibility and protect us from the evil that may corrupt our lineage.
