ما سَعِدَ مَنْ شَقى إخْوانُهُ۔
He who makes his brothers miserable does not gain felicity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Felicity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما سَعِدَ مَنْ شَقَّى إخْوانُهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of treating one's brothers and sisters in faith with kindness and compassion. The word (shaqqa) "شَقَّى" in this Hadith refers to causing misery or distress to others. It is derived from the root word (shaqqa) "شَقَّ", which means to split or divide.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of unity, brotherhood, and compassion among Muslims. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:10)
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse highlights the bond of brotherhood that exists among Muslims. It reminds us that we are part of a larger family, and it is our duty to maintain peace and harmony within this family. By causing misery to our brothers and sisters, we not only disrupt this unity but also distance ourselves from the blessings and felicity that come with it.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that kindness and compassion towards others are essential qualities of a true believer. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:29)
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
This verse warns against being stingy and selfish, as it leads to a miserable and constricted life. By withholding kindness and causing distress to others, we restrict the blessings and happiness that Allah has bestowed upon us. On the other hand, by extending our hand in generosity and compassion, we open ourselves up to the abundant blessings and felicity that Allah has promised.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the consequences of our actions. When we make our brothers and sisters miserable, we not only harm them but also harm ourselves. Our actions have a ripple effect, impacting the overall harmony and well-being of the Muslim community.
Moreover, this Hadith serves as a motivation for us to strive towards unity and brotherhood. When we treat others with kindness and compassion, we create an environment of love and support. This, in turn, strengthens our faith and brings us closer to Allah. By prioritizing the happiness and well-being of our fellow Muslims, we attain true felicity in this world and the hereafter.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense knowledge and wisdom possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His words echo the teachings of the Quran, emphasizing the importance of unity, compassion, and the consequences of our actions. As Muslims, it is our duty to internalize these teachings and strive towards creating a harmonious and loving community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of treating our brothers and sisters in faith with kindness and compassion. By causing misery to others, we not only harm them but also harm ourselves. It is through unity, love, and support that we attain true felicity in this world and the hereafter. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the ability to be a source of happiness and comfort for our fellow Muslims.
