ما أقْرَبَ النَّعِيمَ مِنَ البُؤْسِ۔
How close bounty is to woe!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما أقْرَبَ النَّعِيمَ مِنَ البُؤْسِ۔
This can be translated as,
How close bounty is to woe!
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encapsulates a deep understanding of the nature of life and the close proximity of blessings and hardships.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (na'eem) "نَعِيمَ" refers to blessings, favors, and all forms of goodness that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation. It encompasses both material and spiritual blessings, such as health, wealth, knowledge, and tranquility. On the other hand, (boos) "بُؤْسِ" refers to hardships, difficulties, and adversities that one may face in life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the close proximity of these two contrasting aspects of life. It serves as a reminder that blessings and hardships are intertwined and often come hand in hand. This understanding is beautifully reflected in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Inshirah (94:5-6),
Verily, with every difficulty, there is relief. Verily, with every difficulty, there is relief.
The Quranic ayat further emphasizes the close relationship between blessings and hardships. It assures us that for every difficulty we face, there is relief and ease awaiting us. This provides solace and hope during challenging times, reminding us that hardships are temporary and will be followed by blessings.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also draws our attention to the transient nature of both blessings and hardships. Just as hardships can be temporary, so too can blessings. This aligns with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.
This verse reminds us that the worldly life is fleeting and transient. It is a test, where we are tested with both blessings and hardships. Therefore, it is crucial for us as Muslims to remain steadfast and grateful during times of blessings and patient during times of hardships.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening Hadith also serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and moderation in our lives. It is easy to become complacent and forgetful of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during times of abundance, and it is equally easy to become disheartened and lose hope during times of adversity. However, recognizing the close proximity of blessings and hardships helps us maintain a balanced perspective.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on the purpose behind blessings and hardships. Both serve as tests and opportunities for growth. Blessings are a means for us to express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and utilize them in ways that benefit ourselves and others. Hardships, on the other hand, provide us with opportunities for self-reflection, resilience, and spiritual growth.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the close proximity of blessings and hardships in our lives. It emphasizes the transient nature of both and encourages us to maintain a balanced perspective. By recognizing the purpose behind these experiences and responding with gratitude and patience, we can navigate through the challenges of life and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to appreciate His blessings and the strength to endure hardships with patience.
