Hadith #9558

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ يَمْلِكْ لِسانَهُ يَنْدَمْ۔

This can be translated as,

One who does not control his tongue regrets.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of restraining one's speech and the consequences of failing to do so.

The word "لَمْ يَمْلِكْ" in the Hadith means "does not control" or

does not possess mastery over.

It implies that a person who lacks control over their tongue is unable to govern their speech and is therefore prone to making regretful statements. The word "لِسانَهُ" refers to the tongue, which is the instrument of speech. Thus, the Hadith emphasizes the need for individuals to exercise control over their tongues and be mindful of the words they utter.

This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds resonance in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of guarding one's speech. In Surah Al-Qalam, verse 10, Allah says, (68:10)

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

This verse warns against following those who engage in vain and meaningless speech, highlighting the need to be cautious about the words we use.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 36, Allah says, (17:36)

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned

This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for our words and actions, urging us to refrain from speaking about matters we have no knowledge of. It emphasizes the importance of controlling our tongues and only speaking when we have something beneficial or truthful to say.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their speech and to exercise restraint. It highlights the potential consequences of uncontrolled speech, such as causing harm to others, spreading rumors, or engaging in backbiting and slander. These actions not only damage relationships but also tarnish one's own character and reputation.

By controlling our tongues, we can avoid regret and strive for a higher standard of communication. This involves speaking with wisdom, kindness, and sincerity. It means refraining from engaging in gossip, spreading falsehoods, or using hurtful language. Instead, we should strive to use our words to promote unity, understanding, and compassion among fellow Muslims.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, and his teachings continue to guide Muslims to this day. His emphasis on controlling the tongue is a reflection of his deep understanding of the Quranic teachings and the importance of guarding one's speech. As Muslims, we should strive to follow his example and be mindful of the words we speak, recognizing that our tongues hold the power to either bring about regret or contribute to our spiritual growth and the betterment of society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to control our tongues and use our words for the betterment of ourselves and others. May He guide us to speak with kindness, truthfulness, and wisdom, and protect us from the regret that comes from uncontrolled speech. Ameen.
