Knowledge is through understanding.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ بِالفَهْمِ" which translates to

Knowledge is through understanding.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge with a deep level of comprehension and insight.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the acquisition of information, facts, and understanding about various subjects. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is highly valued in Islam, as it is a means to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to fulfill our purpose in this world.

The word (understanding) "فَهْمِ" refers to the ability to comprehend, grasp, and internalize knowledge. It goes beyond mere memorization or superficial understanding. True understanding involves deep reflection, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in practical situations.

To support the importance of understanding in acquiring knowledge, the Quran provides several verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43),

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

This verse emphasizes that true understanding of the signs and examples presented by Allah requires knowledge.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.

This verse highlights the importance of understanding the signs and miracles of Allah, as it was only those with knowledge who recognized the significance of Prophet Jesus (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his mother Mary.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that knowledge without understanding is incomplete and ineffective. It encourages Muslims to strive for a deep level of comprehension in all aspects of knowledge, whether it be religious teachings, sciences, or any other field of study.

When we seek knowledge with understanding, we are able to apply it in our daily lives, make informed decisions, and benefit ourselves and society. Understanding also enables us to critically analyze information, differentiate between right and wrong, and avoid falling into ignorance or misunderstanding.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his immense knowledge and understanding. His deep insights into the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad () are evident in his sermons, letters, and sayings. He was a role model for Muslims in seeking knowledge with understanding and using it for the betterment of humanity.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "العِلْمُ بِالفَهْمِ" reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge with understanding. It urges us to go beyond surface-level knowledge and strive for a deep comprehension that allows us to apply knowledge in our lives. By doing so, we can fulfill our duty as Muslims to seek knowledge, benefit ourselves and others, and ultimately attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the ability to seek knowledge with understanding and bless us with wisdom and guidance.
