Anxiety is more exhausting than patience.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anxiety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الجزع أتعب من الصبر

which translates to

Anxiety is more exhausting than patience.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental effects of anxiety on an individual's well-being.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (al-jaz') "الجزع" refers to anxiety, distress, or unease. It is a state of restlessness and worry that consumes a person's mind and drains their energy. On the other hand, (as-sabr) "الصبر" means patience, endurance, and steadfastness. It is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of difficulties and trials.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and warns against the harmful effects of anxiety. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:45)

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]

This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking assistance from Allah in times of distress.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah reminds us, (2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient

Here, Allah assures us that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life, but those who possess patience will be rewarded.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the detrimental effects of anxiety. When we allow ourselves to be consumed by worry and distress, it drains our energy, weakens our resolve, and hinders our ability to face challenges with strength and resilience. Anxiety can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, affecting our overall well-being.

In contrast, patience enables us to maintain a state of tranquility and inner peace, even in the face of adversity. It allows us to approach difficulties with a clear mind and a steadfast heart. Patience empowers us to navigate through life's challenges, knowing that Allah is with us and that every trial is an opportunity for growth and reward.

Let us reflect on the consequences of anxiety and the benefits of patience in our daily lives. When faced with a difficult situation, do we allow ourselves to be consumed by worry and anxiety, or do we turn to Allah with patience and trust in His plan? By practicing patience, we not only preserve our energy and well-being, but we also strengthen our relationship with Allah and develop a deeper sense of faith.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful Hadith in this Hadith reminds us of the exhausting nature of anxiety and the importance of cultivating patience in our lives. By seeking solace in the Quranic teachings on patience and reflecting on the consequences of anxiety, we can strive to embody the qualities of patience and find inner peace amidst life's challenges. May Allah grant us the strength to face difficulties with patience and grant us tranquility in times of anxiety.
