(Ghurar al-Hikam: Divine Decree And Destiny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound wisdom and guidance found within the changes and fluctuations that occur as a result of Allah's divine decree. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that these changes hold valuable lessons for those who possess understanding and intellect.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (tasarif) "تَصاريفِ" refers to the changes or fluctuations that occur in the course of divine decree. These changes encompass the various events and circumstances that take place in our lives, whether they are perceived as positive or negative. The word (qada) "قَضاءِ" refers to the divine decree or predestination of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To comprehend the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 216:
But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.
This verse reminds us that what may appear as a hardship or a change in our lives may actually be a blessing in disguise. Our limited understanding may lead us to dislike certain events, but Allah's infinite wisdom knows what is ultimately beneficial for us.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse emphasizes that trials and challenges are an inevitable part of life. These trials serve as tests of our faith, resilience, and character. They provide opportunities for growth, self-reflection, and spiritual development.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect on the changes and fluctuations that occur in our lives. It encourages us to approach these events with reason and intellect, seeking to understand the lessons they hold. These changes can manifest in various forms, such as personal hardships, societal transformations, or global crises. By contemplating the underlying wisdom behind these changes, we can gain valuable insights and guidance.
For instance, during times of personal hardship, such as the loss of a loved one or financial difficulties, we may be inclined to question the fairness of these circumstances. However, through the lens of reason and intellect, we can recognize that these trials serve as opportunities for us to strengthen our faith, develop patience, and seek solace in Allah's mercy and guidance.
Similarly, on a broader scale, societal changes and challenges can also provide lessons for the people of reason and intellect. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in our lives, disrupting routines and causing widespread uncertainty. Through reflection and contemplation, we can recognize the importance of resilience, compassion, and unity in the face of adversity. We can also appreciate the value of gratitude for the blessings we often take for granted.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that the changes brought about by divine decree hold profound lessons for those who possess understanding and intellect. By approaching these changes with reason and reflection, we can gain valuable insights, grow spiritually, and navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and resilience. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to comprehend and apply the wisdom contained within these fluctuations, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
