Hadith #5914

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

A good countenance is an apparent beauty.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a pleasant and beautiful appearance. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.

The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" refers to beauty, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses both physical and moral beauty. In this context, it refers to the outward appearance of an individual. (sura) "الصُّورَةِ" means countenance or appearance. It refers to the face, expression, and overall physical appearance of a person. Finally, (jamal) "اَلجَمالُ" means beauty. It signifies attractiveness, charm, and grace.

To understand the significance of having a good countenance, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of having a firm and confident demeanor, which contributes to a positive countenance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as Allah has been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief.

This verse emphasizes the importance of doing good deeds and maintaining a positive character, which ultimately reflects on one's countenance.
