اَلغيبَةُ شَرُّ الإفْكِ۔
Slander is the worst falsehood.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Backbiting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الغيبة شر الإفك" which translates to
Slander is the worst falsehood.
In this thought-provoking Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the grave consequences and evil nature of engaging in slanderous speech.
To fully comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-ghībah) "الغيبة" refers to backbiting or speaking ill of someone in their absence. It involves spreading false information or making derogatory remarks about an individual behind their back. (sharr) "شر" denotes evil or harm, while (al-ifk) "الإفك" signifies falsehood or lies.
To understand the severity of slander, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against such destructive behavior. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and refraining from backbiting. Allah compares backbiting to consuming the flesh of one's own brother, highlighting the repugnance and immorality of such an act. It is a clear violation of the rights of others and a betrayal of trust.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10-12), Allah recounts the story of the people of Thamud who spread false accusations against the Prophet Salih (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). They engaged in slander and accused him of lying. As a consequence, they were punished severely by Allah, and their dwellings were destroyed.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of spreading falsehood and engaging in slander. It demonstrates the gravity of such actions and the divine retribution that awaits those who indulge in them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the destructive nature of slander. Slander not only harms the reputation and honor of the person being spoken ill of but also tarnishes the character of the one engaging in it. It sows discord and enmity among individuals and communities, eroding trust and unity.
Engaging in slander contradicts the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of truthfulness, justice, and kindness. Islam encourages Muslims to speak the truth, defend the oppressed, and promote harmony and goodwill among people. Slander goes against these principles and undermines the fabric of a righteous society.
Therefore, Muslims must strive to refrain from engaging in slanderous speech and instead focus on promoting unity, understanding, and compassion. We should be cautious of the words we utter and strive to emulate the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his wisdom, knowledge, and impeccable moral conduct.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the severe consequences and moral implications of slander. It urges Muslims to uphold the values of truthfulness, justice, and kindness, and to refrain from engaging in harmful speech that can cause division and harm within society. May Allah guide us all to follow the teachings of Islam and protect us from the evils of slander.
