One who acts hastily is made to stumble by error.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Haste And The Hasty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
مَنْ رَكِبَ العَجَلَ كَبابِهِ الزَّلَلُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as:
One who acts hastily is made to stumble by error.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (rakiba) "رَكِبَ" in this Hadith refers to riding or embarking upon something. It symbolizes the act of engaging in an action or making a decision. The word (ajala) "عَجَلَ" means to act hastily or impulsively, without careful consideration. And the word (zallal) "زَّلَلُ" refers to stumbling or falling into error.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Isra (17:36):
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding before engaging in any action. Acting hastily without proper knowledge can lead to mistakes and errors. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also advises us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6):
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse highlights the need to verify information and not to act impulsively based on hearsay or incomplete knowledge. It reminds us of the importance of seeking the truth and avoiding harm caused by acting without proper understanding.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us through this Hadith about the consequences of acting hastily. When we rush into decisions or actions without careful consideration, we are prone to making mistakes and stumbling into errors. These errors can have far-reaching consequences, both for ourselves and for those around us.
For example, imagine a person who hastily decides to invest a large sum of money without conducting proper research. They may end up losing their investment due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the market. Similarly, someone who hastily makes judgments about others without seeking the full picture may harm relationships and cause regret.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be patient, thoughtful, and diligent in their actions. It encourages us to seek knowledge, consult experts, and reflect upon the consequences of our decisions before embarking upon them. By doing so, we can avoid stumbling into errors and make sound choices that align with the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of avoiding hasty actions and decisions. It reminds us to seek knowledge, verify information, and reflect upon the consequences before embarking upon any course of action. By doing so, we can navigate through life with wisdom and avoid the pitfalls of errors and regrets. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to act with patience and understanding, and protect us from the perils of hasty actions.
