Hadith #3996

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Religion is a treasure and knowledge is a guide [to it].

This enlightening saying highlights the importance of both religion and knowledge in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The word "din" in Arabic refers to religion, faith, or way of life. It encompasses all aspects of a person's relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), including beliefs, worship, and moral conduct. It is a treasure because it is a source of immense spiritual wealth and guidance for a Muslim. The Quran emphasizes the importance of religion in numerous verses, such as in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 208:

O you who have believed, enter into peace completely and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

Without knowledge, we may fall into ignorance, misunderstanding, or misinterpretation, leading to incorrect beliefs or actions.

Furthermore, knowledge equips us to face the challenges and misconceptions that may arise in our interactions with others. It enables us to engage in meaningful dialogue, defend our faith, and promote understanding and tolerance. It also helps us distinguish between authentic Islamic teachings and cultural practices that may have been erroneously attributed to Islam.
