يَوْمُ المَظْلُومِ عَلَى الظّالِمِ أشَدُّ مِنْ يَوْمِ الظّالِمِ عَلَى المَظْلُومِ۔
The day of the oppressed over the oppressor is [going to be] more severe than the day of the oppressor upon the oppressed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Oppressed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
The day of the oppressed over the oppressor is [going to be] more severe than the day of the oppressor upon the oppressed.
This Hadith highlights the divine justice and the ultimate retribution that awaits the oppressors in the Hereafter.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (mazlum) "مَظْلُومِ" refers to the oppressed, while (zalim) "ظّالِمِ" refers to the oppressor. The word (yawm) "يَوْمُ" means day, symbolizing a period of time or a phase of existence. The word (ashadd) "أشَدُّ" means more severe or intense.
To comprehend the connotation of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, the ultimate source of guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice and warns against oppression. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:42)
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
This verse highlights the significance of upholding justice and not distorting the truth.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am, Allah states, (Quran 13:38)
And We have already sent messengers before you and assigned to them wives and descendants. And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign except by permission of Allah. For every term is a decree.
This verse signifies that Allah's messengers were sent to establish justice and eradicate oppression, as they were granted divine permission and guidance.
The consequences of oppression are severe, both in this world and the Hereafter. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah warns, (Quran 7:130)
And We certainly seized the people of Pharaoh with years of famine and a deficiency in fruits that perhaps they would be reminded.
This verse demonstrates that the oppressors are ultimately punished, even in this life, through various trials and hardships.
In the Hereafter, the oppressors will face a severe retribution. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 22:38)
Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
This verse assures the believers that Allah will protect them from the oppressors and that He despises those who betray and show ingratitude.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that justice will prevail, and the oppressed will be granted retribution. It motivates us to stand up against oppression and support those who are unjustly treated. It also serves as a warning to the oppressors, urging them to reflect upon their actions and seek forgiveness before it is too late.
The consequences of oppression can be seen throughout history. Tyrants and oppressors may appear to be powerful and invincible, but their downfall is inevitable. Examples from the past, such as the tyrant Pharaoh and his people, highlight the ultimate fate of those who oppress others. Their power and dominance crumble, and they face the wrath of Allah.
This Hadith also teaches us the importance of seeking justice in our daily lives. We must strive to be fair and just in our dealings with others, ensuring that we do not oppress or cause harm to anyone. By doing so, we align ourselves with the divine principles of justice and contribute to a more harmonious society.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the divine justice that awaits the oppressors in the Hereafter. It serves as a powerful motivation for us to stand up against oppression and support the oppressed. Let us strive to be just and fair in our actions, seeking Allah's pleasure and the ultimate reward in the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all on the path of justice and righteousness.
