In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كُلُّ قانِع غَنِيٌّ۔" which translates to

Every contented one is rich.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to better understand its meaning. The word (qāniʿ) "قانِع" refers to someone who is content, satisfied, and not desiring more than what they have. It signifies a state of inner peace and tranquility, where one is grateful for the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (ghaniyy) "غَنِيٌّ" means rich or wealthy. To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran, the ultimate source of guidance for all Muslims. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse emphasizes the importance of contentment and seeking sustenance from Allah, the Provider of all things. It highlights the need to rely on Allah's blessings and guidance in all aspects of our lives.

Furthermore, in Surah At-Talaq (65:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish His purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion.

This verse reinforces the concept of contentment and trust in Allah's provision. It assures us that Allah will provide for us from sources we cannot even fathom, as long as we place our trust in Him.

Now, let us reflect on the essence of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that true richness lies in contentment. It is not the accumulation of material possessions or wealth that defines our worth, but rather our ability to find contentment and satisfaction with what Allah has blessed us with. Contentment brings about numerous positive consequences in our lives. It allows us to appreciate the blessings we have been given, no matter how small they may seem. Contentment also enables us to avoid envy and jealousy, as we are no longer consumed by the desire for what others possess. Instead, we focus on our own blessings and strive to make the most of them.

Moreover, contentment empowers us to face challenges and difficulties with resilience and patience. When we are content, we are less likely to be overwhelmed by the trials of life. We trust in Allah's wisdom and plan, knowing that He will guide us through any hardship we may encounter.
