(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ يُنْجِدُ الفِكْرَ". The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the understanding and awareness of facts, information, and principles. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The word (aids/strengthens) "يُنْجِدُ" means to support, assist, or facilitate. And the word (reflection) "الفِكْرَ" refers to deep thinking, contemplation, and pondering.

This profound Hadith emphasizes the vital role of knowledge in aiding and strengthening the process of reflection. It highlights the inseparable connection between knowledge and deep thinking. Knowledge provides the necessary tools, information, and insights that enable individuals to engage in meaningful contemplation and reflection.

The Quranic verses beautifully support and reinforce the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269),

He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.

This verse highlights that true wisdom and understanding come from Allah, and it is through knowledge that one can attain this wisdom. Knowledge acts as a means to acquire the divine wisdom that aids in deep thinking and reflection.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

This verse emphasizes that true understanding and comprehension of the examples and signs presented by Allah can only be achieved by those who possess knowledge. It is through knowledge that individuals can delve into the depths of these examples and extract profound meanings through reflection.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and engage in deep reflection. Knowledge acts as a catalyst for critical thinking and intellectual growth. It enables individuals to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and seek solutions to challenges. Without knowledge, reflection may lack substance and depth.

For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, a person with knowledge of Islamic teachings can reflect upon the principles and values derived from the Quran and Sunnah. This reflection, guided by knowledge, will lead to a more informed and righteous decision. Similarly, in matters of personal growth and self-improvement, knowledge equips individuals with the necessary tools to reflect upon their actions, identify areas for improvement, and strive for self-development.

Moreover, knowledge and reflection go hand in hand in the pursuit of religious understanding and spirituality. Through the acquisition of knowledge about Allah's attributes, His guidance, and the teachings of Islam, individuals can engage in deep reflection on the purpose of their existence, the meaning of life, and their relationship with the Creator. This reflection, fueled by knowledge, leads to a stronger connection with Allah and a deeper understanding of His divine wisdom.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the indispensable role of knowledge in aiding and strengthening the process of reflection. Knowledge provides the necessary tools, insights, and understanding that enable individuals to engage in deep thinking and contemplation. It is through knowledge that Muslims can acquire wisdom, comprehend the signs of Allah, make informed decisions, and deepen their spiritual connection. Therefore, Muslims should strive to seek knowledge and engage in continuous reflection to enhance their intellectual and spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with knowledge and wisdom and enable us to reflect upon His signs.
