(Ghurar al-Hikam: Cognizance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The conception of cognizance is through learning knowledge.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge as a means to attain true understanding and awareness.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (liqāh) "لِقاحُ" refers to the process of conception or the initiation of something. It implies the beginning or the foundation upon which knowledge is built. The word (al-ma'rifah) "المَعْرِفَةِ" refers to cognizance or true understanding. It encompasses knowledge that is deeply internalized and leads to spiritual growth.
The Hadith emphasizes that the path to attaining true understanding and awareness is through the acquisition of knowledge. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah says, (Quran 47:19)
So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place
This verse highlights the command to seek knowledge and to understand the oneness of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, Allah states, (Quran 58:11)
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do
This verse emphasizes that those who have been granted knowledge will be elevated in ranks by Allah. It highlights the significance of seeking knowledge as a means to gain closeness to Allah and to attain higher spiritual levels.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims that knowledge is not merely an intellectual pursuit, but a means to attain spiritual enlightenment. It encourages us to actively seek knowledge and to continuously strive for personal growth and development.
Learning knowledge opens doors to understanding the Quran and the teachings of Islam. It allows us to comprehend the wisdom behind Allah's commands and prohibitions. It enables us to make informed decisions and to navigate the complexities of life in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Moreover, seeking knowledge fosters critical thinking and intellectual growth. It equips us with the tools to analyze and evaluate information, enabling us to distinguish between truth and falsehood. This is particularly important in an age where misinformation and misconceptions are prevalent.
Additionally, the pursuit of knowledge has practical implications in our daily lives. It empowers us to contribute positively to society and to address the challenges we face. It enables us to develop skills and expertise that can be utilized for the betterment of ourselves and our communities.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom. His deep understanding of Islam and his ability to apply it in various contexts made him a beacon of guidance for Muslims. His teachings and sayings continue to inspire and enlighten Muslims to this day.

It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the significance of acquiring knowledge. As Muslims, we are encouraged to actively seek knowledge, not only for intellectual growth, but also for spiritual enlightenment and the betterment of ourselves and society.
