Hadith #5192

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and upon his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "رَأْسُ المَعائبِ الشَّرَهُ۔" This can be translated as,

The cornerstone of [all] flaws is voraciousness.

To understand the meaning behind this statement, let us delve into the important words used in this Hadith.

The word (ra's) "رَأْسُ" means "head" or "cornerstone." It signifies the foundation or the root cause of something. In this context, it refers to the root cause of all flaws and imperfections. And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah reminds us,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse emphasizes the balance between seeking the rewards of the Hereafter while not neglecting our responsibilities in this world. It warns against the corruption that arises from excessive desire and greed.

From these Quranic verses, we can understand that excessive desire for worldly possessions and pleasures is the root cause of various flaws and imperfections. When one becomes consumed by voraciousness, they lose sight of their spiritual and moral obligations. They prioritize material gains over the well-being of others and neglect their own spiritual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the dangers of voraciousness in this Hadith. By identifying it as the cornerstone of all flaws, he emphasizes the need to curb our desires and cultivate contentment.
