اَلظَّفَرُ شافِعُ المُذْنِبِ۔
Victory is the intercessor of the guilty.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Victory)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الظَّفَرُ شافِعُ المُذْنِبِ" which translates to
Victory is the intercessor of the guilty.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of victory as a means of intercession for those who have committed sins.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (Dhafar) "ظَفَر" refers to victory or triumph, while (Shafi') "شَافِع" means intercessor, and (Mudhnib) "مُذْنِب" refers to the guilty or sinners.
In the Quran, we find numerous verses that shed light on the concept of victory and intercession. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:35),
O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means of nearness to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking nearness to Allah and striving in His cause as a means to attain victory and success.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse highlights the ultimate victory of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the believers over their enemies, despite their plots and schemes.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The intercession mentioned in the Hadith refers to the act of seeking forgiveness and mercy on behalf of the guilty or sinners. It implies that victory, in its true essence, is not merely about achieving worldly success or triumph, but rather about attaining spiritual victory by seeking forgiveness and redemption from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that victory is not limited to the physical realm, but extends to the realm of spirituality. It is through seeking forgiveness and repentance that one can attain true victory over their own shortcomings and sins.
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for spiritual victory by seeking forgiveness, repenting sincerely, and turning to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of difficulty and sin. It encourages us to understand that true success lies in our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our efforts to rectify our actions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that victory is not solely about worldly achievements, but also about seeking forgiveness and intercession for our sins. It reminds us that true success lies in our spiritual journey and our efforts to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek His forgiveness and attain true victory in this life and the hereafter.
