When the difficulties reach their peak, there is hope for relief.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Relief And Waiting For Relief)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عِنْدَ تَناهِي الشَّدائِدِ يَكُونُ تَوَقُّعُ الفَرَجِ۔
This Hadith beautifully encapsulates the concept of hope and relief in times of extreme difficulties. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its connotation in light of the Quran.
The word (tanahi) "تَنَاهِي" refers to the peak or extreme point of something. It signifies the culmination or climax of hardships and challenges. It is at this point that the human spirit may feel overwhelmed and despair may start to creep in. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that it is precisely at this juncture that we should hold on to hope.
The word (tawaqqul) "تَوَقُّعُ" means hope, expectation, or anticipation. It is a state of mind where one places their trust and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone, seeking relief and succor from Him. This hope is not passive; rather, it is an active belief that Allah's mercy and assistance will come to our aid in times of distress.
The word (al-faraj) "الفَرَجِ" refers to relief, deliverance, or the end of difficulties. It signifies the light at the end of the tunnel, the resolution of problems, and the alleviation of suffering. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that just as difficulties reach their peak, relief is also imminent. This Hadith instills in us the hope and assurance that Allah's mercy is always near, even in the darkest of times.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5-6),
Verily, with hardship, there is relief. Verily, with hardship, there is relief.
This repetition emphasizes the certainty of relief after hardship. It assures us that Allah's mercy is always present, and He will alleviate our difficulties.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knows our capabilities and limits. He will never burden us with challenges that exceed our capacity to handle. Therefore, when we face overwhelming difficulties, we can take solace in the fact that Allah has equipped us to overcome them.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that it holds profound wisdom and guidance for us as Muslims. It teaches us to remain steadfast in our faith and to never lose hope, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that relief is always near when we place our trust in Allah.
This Hadith also highlights the importance of patience and perseverance. It urges us to endure hardships with resilience and trust in Allah's plan. It reminds us that just as the night is followed by the dawn, our difficulties will eventually give way to ease and tranquility. By maintaining hope and relying on Allah, we can navigate through the storms of life with grace and fortitude.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a beacon of hope and solace for Muslims facing trials and tribulations. It reminds us that even in the depths of despair, relief is imminent. By placing our trust in Allah and remaining steadfast in our faith, we can find strength and courage to overcome any challenge that comes our way. May Allah grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
