Hadith #10878

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أفْضَلُ الوَرَعِ حُسْنُ الظَّنِّ

which translates to

The best piety is thinking positively [about others].

This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having a positive mindset and assuming the best of intentions in our interactions with others.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (warā') "وَرَعِ" refers to piety or righteousness, encompassing acts of worship and moral conduct. O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and backbiting, as they are detrimental to the unity and harmony of the Muslim community. It highlights the severity of negative assumptions, equating them to a sinful act. Instead, Allah encourages us to fear Him and have a positive mindset towards our fellow Muslims.

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse advises against mocking or belittling others, as we do not know their true worth in the sight of Allah. It reminds us that outward appearances or worldly achievements do not necessarily reflect a person's true character or spiritual status. Therefore, it is essential to refrain from making negative judgments and instead treat others with respect and kindness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a positive mindset and assuming the best of intentions in our interactions with others.
