(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالعِلْمِ تَكُونُ الحَياةُ۔" This Hadith can be translated as,

Through knowledge, there is life.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of knowledge in the life of a Muslim.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمِ" refers to the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is not limited to mere facts and figures, but it also includes the comprehension and application of that knowledge in one's life.

The word (there is) "تَكُونُ" signifies the existence or presence of something. In this context, it implies that life is only truly meaningful and purposeful when it is accompanied by knowledge. Knowledge breathes life into our existence, enlightening our minds, and guiding our actions.

The word (life) "الحَياةُ" refers to the state of being alive, both physically and spiritually. It encompasses all aspects of our existence, including our relationships, actions, and beliefs. Without knowledge, life becomes stagnant, devoid of growth and progress.

To understand the significance of knowledge in Islam, we turn to the Quran, the ultimate source of guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and using it to navigate through life's challenges.

In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. Those who seek knowledge and understand its value are the ones who truly remember and comprehend the purpose of their existence.

In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is through knowledge that individuals are raised in ranks and granted success in this life and the hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says,

He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.

This verse highlights that wisdom, which is a product of knowledge, is a great blessing from Allah. It is through wisdom that individuals are able to make sound decisions and navigate through the complexities of life.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that knowledge is not merely a means of acquiring information, but it is a source of life itself. Through knowledge, we gain a deeper understanding of our faith, our purpose, and the world around us. It empowers us to make informed choices, seek truth, and contribute positively to society.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of knowledge in his own life. His teachings and sayings continue to inspire and guide Muslims to this day. By seeking knowledge and applying it in our lives, we can truly experience the life-giving power of knowledge, just as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) envisioned.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that knowledge is the key to a meaningful and purposeful life. Through knowledge, we gain insight, wisdom, and the ability to navigate through the challenges of this world. Let us strive to seek knowledge, both religious and worldly, and utilize it to enrich our lives and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the desire and ability to seek knowledge and may it be a means of elevating our ranks in this life and the hereafter.
