أفْضَلُ الطّاعاتِ العُزُوفُ عَنِ اللَّذّاتِ۔
The best obedience is relinquishing the [worldly] pleasures.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أفْضَلُ الطّاعاتِ العُزُوفُ عَنِ اللَّذّاتِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of abstaining from worldly pleasures as the highest form of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (al-'uzuf) "العُزُوفُ" in this Hadith refers to the act of refraining or abstaining from something. It implies a voluntary withdrawal or renunciation of worldly desires and pleasures. This includes not only physical indulgences but also the attachment to material possessions, wealth, and the pursuit of temporary gratification. By relinquishing these pleasures, one demonstrates their commitment to obedience and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the concept of abstaining from worldly pleasures as a means of attaining spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:14)
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
This verse highlights the allure of worldly pleasures and how they captivate the hearts of individuals. However, it also reminds us that true fulfillment and ultimate reward lie with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. By abstaining from these temporary pleasures, we redirect our focus towards the eternal and everlasting rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Another verse that reinforces the significance of relinquishing worldly desires is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 18:45)
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
This verse draws a parallel between the transient nature of worldly pleasures and the fleeting nature of rainwater that nourishes the earth. Just as the rainwater eventually evaporates, leaving behind only remnants, the pleasures of this world also fade away, leaving us empty and unfulfilled. By recognizing the temporary nature of these pleasures, we are motivated to detach ourselves from them and instead focus on the eternal rewards that await us in the hereafter.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over the pursuit of worldly pleasures. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of life and instead seek spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
By practicing self-restraint and abstaining from worldly desires, we develop a stronger sense of self-discipline and control over our desires. This self-control allows us to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam and to resist the temptations that may lead us astray. It also helps us to maintain a balanced and moderate approach to life, avoiding excess and extravagance.
Moreover, by relinquishing worldly pleasures, we free ourselves from the distractions and attachments that can hinder our spiritual progress. We become more focused on our worship, our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and our pursuit of righteousness. This heightened spiritual awareness enables us to lead a more purposeful and meaningful life, guided by the principles of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of abstaining from worldly pleasures as the highest form of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By relinquishing these temporary and fleeting pleasures, we redirect our focus towards the eternal rewards promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This practice of self-restraint and detachment allows us to develop self-discipline, maintain a balanced approach to life, and deepen our spiritual connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to prioritize our obedience to Him over the allure of worldly pleasures.
