Hadith #10051

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْمَالُ نَهْبُ الْحَوَادِثِ" which translates to

Wealth is the plunder of calamities.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the deeper meaning and consequences of wealth in our lives.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (wealth) "مال" refers to material possessions, money, and resources that one possesses. To comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. So whoever believes and reforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

This verse reminds us that messengers, including Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), were sent to guide humanity towards righteousness and warn them of the consequences of their actions.

In another verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that trials and tribulations are a part of life, including the loss of wealth. However, those who remain patient and steadfast in their faith will be rewarded.
