رُبَّ لَهْو يُوحِشُ حُرّاً۔
Many an amusement alienates a freeman.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Amusement)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُبَّ لَهْو يُوحِشُ حُرّاً۔
This Hadith can be translated into English as,
Many an amusement alienates a freeman.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.
The word (lahw) "لَهْو" in Arabic refers to amusement, entertainment, or diversion. It encompasses any activity that distracts a person from their responsibilities or diverts them from the path of righteousness. The word (yuhishu) "يُوحِشُ" means to isolate, separate, or distance oneself. And the word (hurran) "حُرّاً" refers to a freeman, someone who is free from the shackles of ignorance and sin.
This Hadith highlights the detrimental effects of excessive indulgence in worldly amusements. It serves as a reminder that too much engagement in idle pursuits can lead to the isolation and distancing of a person from their true potential and purpose in life. It warns against becoming enslaved by the temporary pleasures of this world, which can hinder our spiritual growth and hinder us from fulfilling our duties as Muslims.
The Quran provides us with several verses that shed light on the wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:32),
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason?
This verse emphasizes the transient nature of worldly amusements and directs our attention towards the everlasting abode of the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the illusionary nature of material possessions. It reminds us that the true purpose of life lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and striving for success in the Hereafter. Excessive attachment to worldly amusements can blind us from the reality of our existence and lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a cautionary reminder for Muslims to strike a balance between their worldly engagements and their spiritual obligations. While it is permissible to enjoy lawful amusements in moderation, excessive indulgence can lead to neglecting our duties towards Allah and our fellow human beings. It can distract us from seeking knowledge, performing acts of worship, and fulfilling our responsibilities as members of society.
For example, spending excessive time on social media, video games, or other forms of entertainment can consume our valuable time and energy, leaving us with little motivation or inclination to engage in acts of worship or beneficial activities. It can also lead to neglecting our family, friends, and community, as we become engrossed in our own self-centered pursuits.
Moreover, excessive indulgence in amusements can have detrimental effects on our character and moral values. It can desensitize us to the suffering of others, promote materialistic attitudes, and foster a culture of instant gratification. This can lead to a decline in empathy, compassion, and social responsibility, which are essential qualities for a Muslim.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's statement,
Many an amusement alienates a freeman,
serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the potential negative consequences of excessive engagement in worldly amusements. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth, fulfill our responsibilities, and maintain a balance between our worldly pursuits and our obligations as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to the straight path and protect us from the distractions and temptations of this world.
